Denied the opportunity to sing at Constitution Hall because of her race, Marian Anderson sang instead at the nearby Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday in 1939. In front of a crowd of more than 75,000, Marian’s beautiful contralto voice filled the air—and gained her the level of recognition in the United States that she had already attained in Europe.
