On April 2, 2002, a group of armed Palestinians took refuge from the Israeli military in one of the oldest churches in existence. For the next 39 days, the eyes of the world were on the Church of the Nativity in the city of Bethlehem. Almost 200 people—militants, monks, and nuns—huddled in the ancient basilica built to honor the birthplace of Jesus.
